HS Code Lookup
Search by product description. We use the global Harmonized System (HS) and show the code in your country's naming: HTS (US), ITC-HS (India), TARIC (EU). Results include full hierarchy and plain-English explanations.
How to Find the Right HS Code
Use a specific product description rather than a generic category. Instead of "electronics," try "lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack for laptops." The more specific the description, the more precise the subheading match.
HS codes are organized hierarchically: Chapter (2-digit) → Heading (4-digit) → Subheading (6-digit) → country-specific digits. Each result shows the full hierarchy so you can verify the classification logic.
For goods that could fall under multiple headings, check the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) — or consult a licensed customs broker. Always confirm with the relevant authority before filing import/export documentation.
Country Tariff Schedules
The US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) is published by the USITC and updated annually. 10-digit HTS codes determine import duty rates, Section 301 and anti-dumping measures, and statistical reporting. The related Schedule B code is used for US exports.
India's ITC-HS codes are maintained by the DGFT. 8 digits cover all goods. Duty rates are set in the Customs Tariff Act and updated via Union Budget notifications each February.
TARIC integrates all EU trade measures including the Common External Tariff, anti-dumping duties, quotas, and licensing requirements. The 10-digit code is mandatory for EU import declarations. Updated daily on the EU TARIC portal.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I use the HS Code Lookup tool?
- Type a product description in plain English (e.g. 'cotton t-shirts', 'lithium-ion battery'). Select your target country and click Search. Results display matching HS codes with full hierarchical descriptions and plain-English explanations.
- Can I search by HS code number instead of description?
- Yes. Enter a 6-digit (or longer) HS code number directly to look up its full description, hierarchy, and country-specific classification.
- What is a Schedule B code and how does it differ from HTS?
- Schedule B codes are US export classification codes used for Census Bureau reporting. They share the same first 6 HS digits with HTS import codes but may differ at the 10-digit level. Use HTS for US imports and Schedule B for US exports.
- How often are HS codes updated?
- The WCO updates the Harmonized System every 5 years (2022 edition is current). Countries update extended digits more frequently — India's ITC-HS and the EU's TARIC see annual updates. Always verify the current schedule before filing documents.
